Stanley M. Simpson created a trust fund to pay for capital improvements to Knox Mountain Park. The first expenditure was for a road to the summit of the mountain, which was built in the 1960s. The Stanley Simpson Nature Pavilion, a children’s playground and a picnic area were built soon after. The pavilion was subsequently vandalized beyond repair. Using the balance of the trust fund, along with some funds from the city, a new pavilion, a caretaker’s residence and public washrooms were built in 2004. At the official opening, the building was renamed the Pioneer Pavilion to honour all Kelowna’s early pioneers, one of whom was Stanley M. Simpson. The pavilion can be reached via Knox Mountain Road. | Sharron Simpson Collection
