The shield, with wavy blue lines on white at the base, depicts Okanagan Lake. From it rise three triangular spires, representing mountains; above these are two apples of gold. A wreath supports a bearing apple tree. At the base of the tree, the crosscut saw is emblematic of the lumber industry and early pioneers. The supporters on either side of the shield are a grizzly bear, indicating the derivation of the city’s name, and a seahorse, which in heraldry is the closest approximation of the Ogopogo. The motto, “Fruitful in Unity,” alludes to Kelowna’s steady progress, largely attributable to its fruit industry and its community-mindedness and co-operative citizens. The mayor’s chain of office was a jubilee anniversary gift from the residents and businesses that had been part of the community for fifty years. | Courtesy of the City of Kelowna
