CRESTON, town, pop 4,826 (2006), in the valley of the KOOTENAY R south of KOOTENAY LK, is the centre of an AGRICULTURAL and TREE FRUIT-growing area made possible by land reclamation along the river, first proposed by William BAILLIE-GROHMAN in the 1880s. Located on the Crowsnest Hwy (Hwy 3), it became a distribution centre for the Kootenay Flats following completion of the SOUTHERN RWY OF BC from CROWSNEST PASS to Kootenay Landing in 1898.
