Skidegate


SKIDEGATE  () , pop 743 (2001), is on the south side of Graham Island, the largest of the QUEEN CHARLOTTE ISLANDS. It is named for the HAIDA chief who met the first FUR TRADERS here in 1787. In 1853 Haida from Skidegate began visiting VICTORIA annually to trade and socialize. Diseases they brought back contributed to the drastic decline of the Haida population on the islands.
