Nakusp


NAKUSP, village, pop 1,589 (2021), overlooks the east side of Upper ARROW LK in the SELKIRK MTS of southeastern BC, midway between REVELSTOKE and CASTLEGAR. The name comes from an aboriginal word indicating that the lakeshore site gave CANOES shelter from the wind. The community was established in 1893 as the western terminus of the Nakusp & Slocan Rwy that built into the Slocan Valley, offering Nakusp the prospect of becoming a major shipping and smelting centre.
