Myers, Samuel H.


MYERS, Samuel H., miner, labour activist (b 1838, Ireland; d 3 May 1887, Nanaimo). Myers came to BC in 1858 from his native Ireland to join the Fraser R GOLD RUSH. He made his living at various jobs and MINING claims around the Interior before settling in NANAIMO in the mid-1870s to work in the COAL mines (see COAL MINING, VANCOUVER ISLAND). At the end of 1883 he organized the first assembly of the radical KNIGHTS OF LABOR in BC. By mid-1887 the Knights had 6 local assemblies in the province....
