Mabel Lake

MABEL LAKE is a farming (see AGRICULTURE) and LOGGING community on the Shuswap R, 35 km east of VERNON and 12 km south of the lake itself, which was named for Mabel Hope Charles, daughter of William Charles, HBC manager at Fort HOPE. A major log drive occurred for many years on the river. When the timber reached Mabel Lk, it was collected in a LOG BOOM and winched to the outlet by horses working on a raft. Today there is a provincial PARK on the lake.
