Kualt

KUALT, on SHUSWAP LK 12 km north of SALMON ARM near present-day TAPPEN, was an early SAWMILLING settlement and CPR station that had disappeared by WWI. In 1886 Joseph Genelle built a sawmill here that employed 50 people. The Columbia River Lumber Co, a subsidiary of CANADIAN WESTERN LUMBER CO, opened another mill in the 1900s. Kualt is a SECWEPEMC (Shuswap) word meaning "east" and refers either to a nearby village or a neighbouring tribal group.
