Canadian Western Lumber Co


CANADIAN WESTERN LUMBER CO, initially Ross Maclaren Co, built its first SAWMILL at MILLSIDE on the FRASER R, just upstream from NEW WESTMINSTER, in 1889. James Maclaren, an Ottawa Valley lumberman, and Frank Ross, a Quebec lumber merchant, headed the company, which built a second mill at BARNET on BURRARD INLET. The company obtained a large tract of timber in the CULTUS LK area, but ran into difficulty during its early years due to depressed lumber markets.
