Coombs

COOMBS, pop 1,372, is on the east side of VANCOUVER ISLAND near PARKSVILLE. It began in 1910 with the arrival of 100 farm settlers (see AGRICULTURE) from Leeds, England, sponsored by the SALVATION ARMY as part of its program to resettle poor Britons in Canada. Coombs was named for Thomas Coombs, the organization's Canadian commissioner. It is a quiet rural community with a series of TOURIST attractions, including a country market where goats graze on the sod-covered roof.
