CONNOLLY, William, fur trader (b circa 1786, Lachine, QC; d 3 June 1848, Montreal). A veteran of the NORTH WEST CO, he joined the newly organized HBC in 1821 as a chief trader and in 1824 took command in NEW CALEDONIA (the central Interior of BC). During the next 7 years he managed the business of the district, developing new transportation routes to the coast and extending the trade west and north toward the Russian traders in Alaska.
