Chilanko Forks

CHILANKO FORKS, pop 123, a ranching settlement on the Chilanko R and the CHILCOTIN Hwy 55 km west of ALEXIS CREEK, dates from the early 1900s. The Nygaard family founded the original ranch and sold it to Arthur Knoll in 1912. Part of the PUNTZI LAKE air base was built on the property. Today Ducks Unlimited has turned much of it into a WETLANDS reserve for waterfowl. Chilanko, also spelled Chilanco, is a TSILHQOT'IN word meaning "many beaver river."
