Cherryville

CHERRYVILLE, pop 619, 37 km east of VERNON in the foothills of the MONASHEE MTS, began in the 1860s to attract prospectors looking for GOLD in the rugged tributaries of the Shuswap R. A group of English immigrants attempted to establish a fruit-growing community named Camagna before WWI, but it failed and the site was abandoned temporarily. LOGGING and small ranches (see CATTLE INDUSTRY) have supported the local economy. The community is named for the wild cherries that grew in abundance.
