CANADIAN FOREST PRODUCTS LTD (Canfor) was started in 1938 by John Prentice and Poldi Bentley, 2 textile manufacturers fleeing Nazi-occupied Austria. It began as Pacific Veneer Co in NEW WESTMINSTER and manufactured BIRCH and SPRUCE plywood for the construction of fighter planes. In 1940 the company acquired Eburne Sawmills in VANCOUVER and soon after switched to production of DOUGLAS FIR plywood.
