Brilliant

BRILLIANT, pop 146, near CASTLEGAR, was an abandoned GOLD mining camp named Waterloo in 1908 when DOUKHOBORS from Saskatchewan relocated here and established a community, renaming it for the waters of the KOOTENAY R. The newcomers established SAWMILLS, a jam factory and several other enterprises. The tomb of Doukhobor leader Peter VERIGIN is nearby. The 100-m steel and concrete Brilliant Suspension Bridge, constructed by the Doukhobors in 1913, is a national historic site.
