Windermere


WINDERMERE, pop 1,060, overlooks the east side of Windermere Lk, a popular vacation area, 117 km north of CRANBROOK in the E KOOTENAY. The lake was named in 1883 by the surveyor Gilbert SPROAT after the English Lake District. It was developed pre-WWI by Robert Randolph BRUCE as a farming colony for well-to-do British immigrants, but the colony did not live up to its promise and most of the settlers left during the war.
