Westerberg, Andrew Rupert "Ole the Bear"


WESTERBERG, Andrew Rupert "Ole the Bear," pioneer mail carrier (b 8 May 1879, Vasterbottens, Sweden; d 2 May, 1963, Kamloops). He changed his last name from Westerlund when he arrived in Alberta as a young man to take up ranching and trapping. While on a train to VANCOUVER in 1900 he was recruited by a Big Bend MINING crew (see also GOLD RUSH, BIG BEND) and got off the train in REVELSTOKE to settle into a life of prospecting, trapping and hunting. In 1914 he began carrying 110- to 220-kg loads...
