SPENCER, David, retailer (b 9 Aug 1837, St Athan, Wales; d 2 Mar 1920, Victoria). After apprenticing with a dry goods company in his native Wales, he immigrated to VICTORIA in 1863. He began in business as a bookseller, then entered the dry goods business. In 1873 he bought a Government St store and developed it into the department store David Spencer Ltd.
