Smith Inlet


SMITH INLET is one of the smaller FJORDS that indent the mainland coast. Located just north of Cape Caution opposite the north end of VANCOUVER ISLAND, it is guarded by the LIGHTHOUSES on Egg Island at its mouth, which is called Smith Sound. Named in 1786 by James Hanna, a FUR TRADE captain, it was home to the Gwa'sala, the most northerly tribe of the KWAKWAKA'WAKW (Kwakiutl) First Nation; this group gathered farther south at BLUNDEN HARBOUR in the mid-19th century.
