SEWID, James, Kwakwaka'wakw leader, fisher (b 31 Dec 1913, Alert Bay; d 18 May 1988, Campbell River). He grew up on VILLAGE ISLAND and in ALERT BAY. At age 12 he started FISHING on his grandfather's boat. By 1934 he was a skipper and in 1940 he bought his own fish boat. He lived on Village Island until 1945 when he moved with his family to Alert Bay where in 1950 he became the first elected chief of the 'Namgis (Nimpkish) FIRST NATION. He was heir to numerous high-ranking names and positions...
