Northfield

NORTHFIELD was a COAL mining community 5 km northwest of downtown NANAIMO on VANCOUVER ISLAND. The VANCOUVER Coal Mining and Land Co, which had purchased the HBC's mining interests in 1861 and was Robert DUNSMUIR's chief competitor in the coal business, developed a colliery here in 1888. It closed in 1895 but was reactivated briefly in the late 1930s. Northfield is now a residential suburb of Nanaimo. See also COAL MINING, VANCOUVER ISLAND.
