McGowan, Edward "Ned"


McGOWAN, Edward "Ned," prospector (b 1813; d 1893). He was superintendent of police in Philadelphia, where he was implicated in a bank robbery, and a judge in California, where he was acquitted on a murder charge, before he came to the FRASER R in 1858 to mine at Hill's Bar, near Fort YALE (see GOLD RUSH, FRASER R). Late in Dec 1858, P.B. Whannell, the justice of the peace in Yale, ordered the arrest of 2 Hill's Bar men on charges of assault. The Hill's Bar magistrate arrested the men, but...
