Kariya, Paul


KARIYA, Paul, hockey player (b 16 Oct 1974, Vancouver). His father was born in an internment camp for Japanese Canadians (see JAPANESE RELOCATION) during WWII and raised his family on the Lower Mainland, where Paul played HOCKEY at the BURNABY Winter Club. With the PENTICTON Panthers in 1991–92 he tore through the BC JUNIOR HOCKEY LEAGUE, scoring 132 points in 40 games and earning honours as Canada's top junior A hockey player.
