Happy Valley

HAPPY VALLEY, a farming (see AGRICULTURE) district 13 km west of VICTORIA, became home to a group of BLACK settlers from the US in about 1860. There are various explanations for the name. According to an early postmaster, one of the settlers, Isaac Mull, named the valley for the joy he felt at being a free man in Canada. Happy Valley is a suburb of COLWOOD, along with the neighbouring communities of METCHOSIN, Luxton and Glen Lake.
