CURTIS, Edward S., photographer (b 19 Feb 1868, WI; d 21 Oct 1952, CA). A self-taught photographer, he began his career in St Paul, MN, before moving with his father to Washington state when he was 19 to homestead. In 1891 he joined a photographic firm in Seattle and soon came to own it. He took his first portrait of a Native in 1896 and began to develop his ambitious plan to make a photographic record of N American aboriginal people before they vanished, as he believed they were destined to...
