Coal Harbour

COAL HARBOUR, pop 215, overlooks Holberg Inlet, an arm of QUATSINO SOUND 15 km south of PORT HARDY on northern VANCOUVER ISLAND. Founded by COAL miners in the 1880s, it was a Royal Canadian Air Force FLYING BOAT STATION during WWII. In 1947 the base was converted to a shore WHALING station; whales killed offshore were towed here for processing. The station closed in 1967. Commercial FISHING has been important to the area.
