CLAYOQUOT, on Stubbs Island in CLAYOQUOT SOUND, 2 km northwest of TOFINO on the west coast of VANCOUVER ISLAND, was the sound's commercial centre for many years. William E. BANFIELD, after whom BAMFIELD is named, built a fur-trading post here in 1855. Another store was run by Frederick Thornberg from 1874 to 1885.
