Cawston

CAWSTON, pop 1,013, is on the SIMILKAMEEN R 5 km southeast of KEREMEOS. The HBC opened a store here in 1860 in the home of the original homesteader, R.L. Cawston, and experimented with growing wheat. In 1864 F.X. RICHTER, a rancher, began raising cattle (see CATTLE INDUSTRY) in the area. Orcharding began in 1911 and today fruit growing is the main economic activity (see TREE FRUITS).
