CARDERO, Manuel José Antonio, sailor, artist (b 20 Oct 1766, Ecija, Spain; d after 1810, in Spain). In 1789 he was a cabin boy on Alejandro MALASPINA's round-the-world expedition. A talented artist, he began making sketches during the trip. The expedition reached Mexico and was diverted north in 1791 to seek the famed Strait of ANIAN.
