CANADIAN GOVERNMENT MERCHANT MARINE LTD was created by the federal government in 1919 to engage in the export trade and support the Canadian SHIPBUILDING industry. The first Pacific sailing was in Jan 1920, when the Canadian Raider left VANCOUVER with a cargo of lumber for Australia. Operated under the management of the CNR, the fleet eventually grew to 68 vessels and 2,000 sailors.
