Barnard, Francis Jones


BARNARD, Francis Jones, stage line operator (b 18 Feb 1829, Quebec City; d 10 July 1889, Victoria). Son of a Quebec harness maker, he came west to join the GOLD RUSH in 1859. After failing to make a strike, he settled in YALE. In 1861 he began carrying mail between Yale and BARKERVILLE, and the next year he organized an express company, Barnard's Express & Stage Line, to deliver mail to the CARIBOO. Within 2 years Barnard was making regular mail and express deliveries up the CARIBOO WAGON ROAD...
