Yates Point


Yates Point (48˚20'00" 123˚36'00" N side of Becher Bay, NE of Arden It, S tip of Vancouver I). James Yates (1819–1900), from Scotland, joined the HBC as a ship’s carpenter in 1848 and travelled to York Factory on Hudson Bay in the Prince Rupert. He also married Mary Powell (d 1898) that year. The couple came to Ft Victoria in 1849 in the Harpooner, and James worked as a shipwright on various HBC vessels. Emma Frances, James and Mary’s daughter, was one of the first white children born...
