Woodward Point


Woodward Point (48˚22'00" 123˚43'00" E side of Sooke Hbr, N of Whiffin Spit, S end of Vancouver I). Thomas Woodward was an RN paymaster aboard HMS Herald, under Capt Henry Kellett, on the Pacific Station in 1846, when Kellett named this feature. The Herald was sent to the Arctic in 1848–50 to assist in the search for missing explorer Sir John Franklin. Woodward contracted a serious illness while in the N and died during the ship’s return voyage to England in 1851.
