Whiffin Spit (48˚21'00" 123˚45'00" At entrance to Sooke Hbr, S end of Vancouver I). John George Whiffin (1826– 92) was a clerk aboard HMS Herald, under Capt Henry Kellett, on the BC coast in 1846–47. He served with the Herald for six years, accompanying Kellett to the Arctic on his search for the missing Sir John Franklin, and was appointed to the rank of paymaster in 1851.
