Waskesiu Passage


Waskesiu Passage (52˚09'00" 128˚25'00" Between Athlone I and Princess Alice I, N end of Queens Sd, W of Bella Bella). HMCS Waskesiu was the first RCN frigate built at Esquimalt by the Yarrows shipyard. It was commissioned in June 1943 and taken directly to Halifax for service in the N Atlantic. In Feb 1944, under Lt Cdr James Fraser, the frigate sank a German submarine, U-257, after forcing it to the surface with depth charges and then destroying it with gunfire.
