Virtue Rock


Virtue Rock (48˚25'00" 123˚15'00" SW of Discovery I, Plumper Passage, E of SE tip of Vancouver I). John Alexander Virtue (1860–1929) was a prominent resident and hotelier at Oak Bay. A native of Que, he was married to Irish-born Sidney Scott (1865–1905) and became manager of the new Mt Baker Hotel at Oak Bay in 1893. This landmark was destroyed by fire in Sept 1902, but Virtue built a new facility, the Oak Bay Hotel, in 1905. Rudyard Kipling stayed there in 1907 and supposedly...
