Vigilant Island


Vigilant Island (54˚20'00" 130˚18'00" Prince Rupert Hbr, N of Kaien I). Named by the hydrographic service in 1908 after the fisheries protection vessel Vigilant, built by the Polson Iron Works Co of Toronto Ltd in 1903–4 and employed on the Great Lks by the federal government. The 54-m Vigilant is regarded as the first modern armed vessel constructed in Canada: a fast, all-steel gunboat that could also be used for defensive patrols in wartime. It was converted to a coal barge in 1935....
