Ucluelet


Ucluelet (48˚56'32" 125˚32'44" On SW side of Ucluelet Inlet), Ucluelet Inlet (48˚57'21" 125˚33'39" NW side of Barkley Sd, W side of Vancouver I). Named after the Ucluelet (Yuu-tluth-aht) First Nation, whose members are part of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council. In 2003 the Nuu-chah-nulth newspaper, Ha-shilth-sa, translated the name as “people with a safe landing place for canoes.” Capt Charles Stuart was the first white settler on the inlet, building a trading post there in 1860.
