Tar Islands (52˚40'00" 131˚25'00" Off E side of Lyell I, E of Moresby I, Hecate Str, QCI), Tar Rock (52˚39'00" 131˚25'00" Just SE of Tar Is). George Mercer Dawson applied the name Tar Is in 1878 to the entire chain that forms the E side of Gogit Passage. His Haida informants had told him of the bituminous substance that oozed to the surface on the islands’ shorelines.
