Somass River


Somass River (49˚14'47" 124˚49'12" Flows SE and S into the head of Alberni Inlet, central Vancouver I). This Nuu-chah-nulth name is usually translated as “flowing down”—a reference to the river’s current. In 2003 the Nuu-chah-nulth newspaper Ha-Shilth-Sa gave the translation “washing” for somass or tsu-ma-uss.
