Smith Rock


Smith Rock (50˚48'00" 126˚25'00" SW side of Tribune Channel, off NW Gilford I, NE of Port McNeill). Ordinary Seaman William Roy Smith, an RCNVR member from Vancouver, was killed in action Nov 24, 1944, aged 19, while serving aboard HMCS Shawinigan. The corvette was on patrol duty in Cabot Str when it was torpedoed and sunk by a U-boat. All 91 crew members died. Smith is commemorated on the Halifax Memorial.
