Shute Passage


Shute Passage (48˚43'00" 123˚23'00" SW of Portland I, NE of Piers I and Coal I, NE of the N end of Saanich Peninsula, N of Victoria), Shute Reef (48˚43'00" 123˚26'00" NW of Piers I, Satellite Channel, off N end of Saanich Peninsula). Capt James Shute of the Royal Marines served on the Pacific Station, 1859–63, aboard HMS Topaze, under Capt John Spencer. He was promoted to maj in 1872.
