San Rafael Island


San Rafael Island (49˚35'00" 126˚37'00" One of the San Miguel Is, off SE Nootka I, Nootka Sd, W side of Vancouver I). This island is today the site of the Nootka lighthouse station, which began operating in 1911. It may have been fortified by the Spanish occupants of Friendly Cove in the early 1790s, as was the neighbouring island to the NE (see San Miguel Is). Presumably it was named by them as well.
