Point Atkinson


Point Atkinson (49˚20'00" 123˚16'00" N entrance point to Burrard Inlet, at Vancouver). Named by Capt George Vancouver for a “particular friend” of his—probably Thomas Atkinson (1767–1836), who was a follower of Adm Lord Nelson and served as master of HMS Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar. Atkinson had earlier taken part in several other notable actions, including at Cape St Vincent, Tenerife, the Nile, Acre and Copenhagen. Later he became master attendant at the Halifax dockyard...
