Panther Point

Panther Point (48˚56'00" 123˚32'00" S tip of Wallace I, Trincomali Channel, off NE side of Saltspring I, Gulf Is). The US clipper ship Panther drifted onto a reef off this point in Jan 1874 and became a total loss. The 60-m, 1,160-tonne vessel, under Capt John Balch, was being towed by the Goliath from Nanaimo with a load of coal when a blinding snowstorm forced the tug to cast it off.
