Nigei Island


Nigei Island (50˚53'00" 127˚45'00" In Queen Charlotte Str, just E of N tip of Vancouver I). Capt George Vancouver named this feature Galiano I on his 1798 chart, in honour of Spanish explorer Dionisio Alcalá-Galiano, who sailed through Goletas Channel in 1792. It was changed to Nigei I (pronounced NEE-gee), the hereditary name of the principal chief of the Nahwitti First Nation, in 1900 in order to avoid duplication with Galiano I in the Gulf Is.
