McKay Passage


McKay Passage (49˚37'00" 126˚37'00" E of SE end of Nootka I, W side of Vancouver I). Named after John McKay, surgeon’s mate on the Experiment, which was part of James Strange’s fur-trading expedition from Asia to the PNW in 1785–86. McKay—whose name is more commonly spelled Mackay—was a native of Ireland who had acquired a little medical training and joined the E India Co as a soldier.
