McCarthy Island

McCarthy Island (48˚27'00" 123˚27'00" W side of Esquimalt Hbr, E of Thetis Cove, W of Victoria). Lt Henry Hotham McCarthy (d 1903) was a Royal Marines officer aboard HMS Fisgard, under Capt John Duntze, on the Pacific Station, 1843–47. He was promoted to maj in 1864. Named by Lt Cdr James Wood of the survey vessel Pandora in 1847.
