Kakawis


Kakawis (49˚11'00" 125˚55'00" W side of Meares I, Clayoquot Sd, W side of Vancouver I). According to regional hydrographer Henri Parizeau in 1933, Kakawis is a Tla-o-qui-aht (Clayoquot) First Nation name meaning “place of salmonberries.” The Nuu-chah-nulth newspaper Ha-shilth-sa, however, translated it in 2003 as “fronted by a rock that looks like a container.” From 1900 to 1971, Kakawis was the site of the Christie residential school, home to about 8,000 First Nation children over...
