Jewitt Cove


Jewitt Cove (49˚42'00" 126˚36'00" E side of Strange I, E of Nootka I, W side of Vancouver I). John Rogers Jewitt (1783–1821), born in England, sailed to the PNW in the US vessel Boston in 1803 as an armourer. The ship’s capt, John Salter, managed to insult Chief Maquinna while trading for furs at Friendly Cove, and next day the Mowachaht leader attacked the Boston, killing all 27 crew members except for two, Jewitt and John Thompson, who had hidden below decks and were only found later....
